Avalanche problems in the area

Problem

Wind-drifted snow

Height

Above 200 m

Aspect

N - NW

Probability

Likely

Size

2

Wind slabs are present on most aspects in the mountains after snow showers and variable winds in the last days.

Keypoints

New snow is bonding poorly with older snow and avalanches have released on these boundaries. Wind slabs continue to form in the mountains in variable southerly winds.

Snow layers and snow cover

New snow is bonding poorly with underlying layers and avalanches have released on these boundaries. Wind slabs in most aspect after variable wind the last days. Wind slabs continue to form in the mountains in southerly wind. A snow pit from March 4 showed new snow on top of a melt-freeze crust, little reactivity in stability tests around the crust layer.

Recent avalanches

A snowmobiler triggered a wide avalanche in Tungudalur, March 4th. Avalanche over the road to Valþjófsdalur on 6th of March. A few small avalanches released on Eyrarhlíð night of March 4th. A wide slab avalanche relesed in a SE aspect and 700 m a.s.l. in Kistufell on Feb 27th. Small avalanches have released in new snow before the weekend in Súðavíkurhlíð, Seljalandsdalur and above Breiðdals tunnel Önundarfjörður side.

Weather and weather forecast

Southeast and then south winds on night to Friday. Southwest winds from Saturday morning. Snow and snow showers in mountains over the weekend. Rrain, sleet and snow in lowland.

Forecast created: 6. Mar 14:46.

Valid to: 9. Mar 00:00.
