Rainfall decreases in the northern Westfjords and Strandir, but landslide hazard persists

As previously reported, there has been considerable rainfall in the northern Westfjords and Strandir over the past few days. Sleet and snowfall at higher elevations and rain at lower elevations have persisted in the area since Friday.

Rainfall measurements show that precipitation has decreased since yesterday, but due to the high moisture content of the slopes, there is still a risk of surface movements, such as debris flows, soil slides and rockfalls. Further rainfall is forecast in the area through Monday, although with lower intensity. Temperatures will remain similar or may be slightly higher, causing the snow line to rise to higher elevations.

An overview of rainfall measurements from the past few days in the area is provided below. The measurements are from automatic and manned weather stations operated by the Icelandic Meteorological Office and have not yet been quality controlled. The data show accumulated rainfall in mm since 09:00 the previous day.

People are advised to follow information on the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration website and to stay informed about weather forecasts and warnings.
