Heavy precipitation in the northern Westfjords and Strandir

There has been heavy precipitation in the northern Westfjords and the Strandir region since Thursday. The highest rainfall—exceeding 120 mm—was recorded at Suðureyri, while over 100 mm was measured at Ísafjörður and Gjögur. The precipitation began as sleet at higher elevations, but temperatures have since dropped, and it is now snowing above 200–400 meters. There have been several instances of rockfalls onto roads; notably, the Strandavegur road between Bjarnafjörður and Djúpavík was closed on Friday after a landslide hit the roadway. The risk of landslides and rockfalls remains in the area, particularly from the lower slopes where there is no snow cover.

Continued precipitation is forecast for the region through Monday.
