Rainy weekend in Northwest and Northeastern part - chances of landslides

Rainfall has exceeded weather forecast predictions. In the Strandir region, 82 mm of precipitation was recorded over the past 24 hours. Forecasts predict continued rain throughout the weekend, particularly in the northwestern and northeastern parts of the country.

Recent days have been rainy, meaning rain is falling onto already saturated ground. Rockfalls and minor landslides on steep slopes cannot be ruled out.

People are advised to exercise caution while travelling, avoid lingering beneath ravines or steep slopes, and remain alert to their surroundings. The Icelandic Meteorological Office’s landslide monitoring team is closely tracking conditions over the weekend.

The Meteorological Office welcomes reports regarding landslides and avalanches. You can contact them by phone at 522-6000 during switchboard hours (https://www.vedur.is/um-vi/hafa-samband/) or by emailing details to skriduvakt@vedur.is. It is helpful to include a photo of the event (landslide, rockfall, or avalanche), the precise location, and the time it occurred or was observed. Such events can also be reported using this form.
