Forecast for Iceland as a whole

Easterly and northeasterly winds of 3–10 m/s. Cloudy with rain in many areas, but partly cloudy with less precipitation in North and East Iceland as the day progresses. Temperatures of 8–18°C, coolest along the north coast.

There is still considerable uncertainty regarding the timing of the weather front and the precipitation across Iceland, although this will decrease as the event approaches. Based on the current outlook, it will be cloudy in most areas with widespread precipitation. However, the cloud cover may break up somewhat later in the day once the front has passed.

A comparison of several forecast models shows little variation between them, indicating that the likely weather conditions for Wednesday are becoming clearer. High-resolution weather models for Iceland will not cover Wednesday evening until their Sunday evening runs. The models currently available use a coarser computational grid. The forecast is therefore expected to become more detailed towards the end of the weekend, particularly regarding the various cloud layers and the type and amount of precipitation.

Weather outlook for the total eclipse area

Capital region

Light easterly winds with rain or drizzle, although less precipitation is expected in the evening. There is a fairly low chance of any breaks developing in the cloud cover.

Reykjanes Peninsula

Easterly winds of 3–8 m/s with intermittent rain or drizzle, but less precipitation in the evening. Overcast conditions are likely, with little indication that the cloud cover will break up.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Easterly and northeasterly winds of 3–8 m/s with occasional light rain or drizzle. However, it could be dry and perhaps partly cloudy or clear earlier in the day. Only minor changes in the forecast would be needed for conditions to remain dry during the solar eclipse.

Westfjords

Generally light northeasterly winds, with a chance of partly cloudy skies during the first part of the day, particularly in the south. However, clouds and occasional light rain are expected as the day progresses. Conditions will probably remain clearer over the southern Westfjords and western Breiðafjörður than in areas such as Ísafjarðardjúp.
